Saturday, April 16, 2011 - Maasterich, The Netherlands Got up very early and left the B&B without breakfast because I had purchased separate train tickets from Brussels to Maastricht via Liege and had to be sure to make the train on time. When you have a rail pass you may still need reservations; and in some instances they actually may be required on the popular trains, the high-speed ones in particular. When I was buying my pass from RailEurope I couldn't get a confirmed reservation on the first leg of the trip...
Friday, April 15, 2011 - Bruges, Belgium. Happy birthday to my sister! I phoned her 9:00 Eastern while I was in the middle of touring Bruges today. What a totally delightful place. It’s as if you’re transported back about 5 centuries. I marvel at the fact that no one pulled down all those 16th and 17th century buildings. There are even earlier buildings (12th century church). Landed at Charles de Gaulle (CDG) airport, the one to fly into for my money. I say that mainly because it’s got great air connections to other European cities, AND there’s a train station right in Terminal 2 that takes you to a number of other counties. Since I headed straight to Brussels this same day, it made really good sense. Also, the really big plus is that Delta...
Here's a birthday tribute to my friend, Elizabeth Mance, who celebrated her birthday on March 24. It's a quick photo reminisce of our Italy trip in 2005.
Not long ago I decided I wanted a genuine, deep Maine Woods experience, preferably without the black flies. After checking out a few camps, I found they were better suited for people who are keen to fish. Then I stumbled on Attean Lake Lodge outside Jackman, Maine. The attraction of the place was and still is irresistible. It is a destination in itself -- the only lodge in Maine situated on an island in the middle of a tranquil lake, and most likely the only one of its kind in the country. Attean couldn’t...
